EXCERPT

You Don’t Have to be Perfect to be a Perfect Mom

I’ve always admired you as a mother. You’ve made it look easy, even though I know you work your ass off at it. Quite frankly, you’re fucking intimidating. But you always supported me when I said I didn’t want to have kids, and you are the only one who didn’t crack jokes when I decided I wanted to have a baby.

When I called you freaking out about how the baby was going to make his exit, you calmly said they had medication [.1] for that. Then I freaked out about the needle for those meds, and you told me that by the point I needed those meds, I wouldn’t give a shit about the size of the needle or where the doctors put it. And you were right, I would have let them stick that needle anywhere.

The night I called you because I wasn’t sure I could do this motherhood thing, you told me I just needed some rest,[.2] and you offered to take the baby for the night. And when I called you at 3:30 in the morning to tell you we were on our way to get him, you didn’t say I told you so.

You’ve always accepted me for who I am, and you taught me to embrace who I am as a mom and not to measure myself by others expectations.

You’re a great friend, mentor, listener, advice giver, sister, and best worst cook ever. The best decision my brother ever made was to ignore me when I told leave you alone.

Sisters Forever,

Macy

[.1]The medication they gave me didn’t do shit. The pain didn’t get to be unbearable until my water broke, and after that, the babies came so fast that they didn’t have time to do an epidural. Sorry, just a little bitter. I told my sister to ask for the epidural before she even changed into the hospital gown. Thank goodness she listened.

[.2]This is another time I’m not sure about commas. I read that if the part after the coordinating conjunction is a complete thought, then it gets a comma. “Offered to take the baby for the night” isn’t a complete thought, but “You offered to take the baby for the night” is. Do you use the comma when the subject is inferred based in the earlier part of the sentence?

Author Bio

One day some words came to mind, so I wrote them down. Soon the words became sentences, which formed paragraphs, which, in turn, formed chapters. Before long, those words had become a book. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm a wife, mother, and business owner. I've lived on the Gulf, East, and West Coasts, but as a born and raised Southern girl, my favorite will always be the Gulf Coast. There's just no place like home...
